Product Specifications
A komsa is a two-stringed African lute played by the Hausa, Songhai and Djerma.
The instrument is used in Hausa music, primarily in northern Nigeria and Niger and among Hausa minorities in Benin, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Cameroon. It is also found among Islamized peoples throughout West Africa.
The instrument uses a calabash gourd as the body of the instrument, covered by skin, with a stick for a neck.

FAQs
How does the Komsa differ from the Soku or Kontigi?
The Komsa is plucked, whereas the Soku is bowed.
Compared to the Kontigi, the Komsa often has a warmer, rounder tone due to differences in skin tension and calabash shape.
Check our full range of strings here.
Is the Komsa related to other African lutes like the Kora?
Yes, they share cultural and musical origins. The Kora, however, is a larger 21-string harp, while the Komsa is a compact lute with fewer strings.
Can the Komsa be used in drumming workshops or drum circles?
Absolutely. Its warm, melodic tone provides a nice contrast to percussion instruments like djembes, bongos, and shakers.
