A kontigi or kuntigi is a one-stringed African lute played by the Hausa, Songhai and Djerma.
The instrument is used in Hausa music, primarily in northern Nigeria and Niger, and among Hausa minorities in Benin, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Cameroon. It is also found among Islamized peoples throughout West Africa.
The instrument uses a calabash gourd as the body of the instrument, covered by skin, with a stick for a neck.

FAQs
What is a Kontigi?
The Kontigi (also called Koni, Konting, or Kunting) is a traditional West African skin-covered lute found across Mali, Gambia, Senegal, and the wider Sahel region.
How does the Kontigi compare to the Komsa?
The Kontigi tends to have a tighter skin head and a brighter, more percussive tone, while the Komsa offers a softer, warmer sound.
Is the Kontigi suitable for new players?
Definitely! It’s small, lightweight, and uses simple plucking patterns, making it a friendly introduction to stringed instruments.
Does the Kontigi work well in drum circles?
Yes, its bright, percussive plucking cuts through group rhythms, especially when paired with djembes and shakers.
