This traditional Wolof Tama from Senegal combines a compact hardwood body with natural lizard skin heads and an adjustable cord-tension system. Played with a curved wooden striker while held beneath the arm, pressure on the cords changes the skin tension and pitch, allowing rhythmic patterns to become highly melodic and expressive.

Comes complete with shoulder strap and traditional wooden striker.

Product Specifications

This is the Tama of the Wolof people. It is smaller than other talking drum styles. It produces the highest pitch of all talking drums and is among the oldest instruments used by West African griot. The Wolof tama is an hourglass-shaped talking drum from Senegal, made by the Wolof and Serer people. Its sound mimics human speech and can be very complex. Talking drums are uncommon in Australia, but they’re popular across Africa. This double-skinned instrument is held under one arm and played by the other with a curved stick. To adjust the pitch, squeeze the drum under the arm while playing. A skilled player can play many whole phrases by using advanced techniques. Our Master Series model comes with Lizard skin. Our Primo Series comes with goat skin
