Team Building Sessions: Key skills

African drumming carries deeply rooted elements that reflect the dynamics of teams, organisations and wellbeing.

Chameleon icon symbolising adaptability, a core element of African drumming corporate team building workshops.

Adaptability

We’ll learn to value and enjoy the growth that comes with change and improvisation.
The shifting roles of the African orchestra offer a natural way to explore adaptability: moving from drum to shakers, and responding to changes in tempo and leadership. When everyone adapts together, the music stays alive and joyful.

Mindfullness

Drumming supports wellbeing, eases stress, and protect against burnout. Group sessions in particular can reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.
It’s also a meditative practice, inviting focus on the beat, the instrument or the hands, while encouraging awareness of thoughts, feelings, and the present moment.

Two overlapping speech bubble icons symbolising communication, representing the role of dialogue and collaboration in African drumming corporate team building workshops.

Communication

Drumming is a language of its own - a way to communicate through rhythm. The leader sets the cues on the drum, and the group replies in sound.
These workshops build rapport and cooperation by guiding participants through musical tasks that highlight and strengthen their ability to communicate effectively together.

Team work

Teamwork is at the heart of the drumming orchestra.
Groups take on different musical roles, reflecting the structure of an organisation, and then combine their parts into a shared composition.
The result is synergy, with everyone contributing to the same goal and finishing on an uplifting high note.

Creativity

An integral part of our sessions.
Once the groove is bedded down, individuals can solo and express their flair and creativity.
The ensemble nature of the drumming, along with moving from structured rhythms to improvising, encourages new ideas and self expression within the context of a group.

Ladder icon symbolising leadership and growth, representing how African drumming workshops highlight guidance, roles and leadership in team building.

Leadership

Our sessions nurture leadership in a whole new way: we break out the roles of the orchestra and assign participants to lead different parts of the rhythms.
When it’s time to step up and lead the group, it’s an empowering position that combines both communicating through the drum, and adapting to the strengths and weaknesses of the ensemble.

Playfulness

A critical part of the experience, without playfulness there is no joy.
When we’re serious, we shut down our ability to create, connect, and be curious. Playfulness is a tremendous stress reliever and a mindfulness tool.
Whatever the team building objective may be, our ultimate goal is always to be in the moment and have plenty of fun.

Confidence

Our sessions are designed to build confidence in various ways.
Playing as part of an ensemble fosters trust in one’s role within the group, while learning a new skill brings a sense of empowerment.
In just one session, participants move from first encounter with the drum to confidently commanding rhythms.

FAQs

We bring djembes (African drums) so every participant has their own drum to play.
It’s a fully hands-on team building drumming workshop from start to finish – no need to share instruments

We can run team building workshops for groups as small as 5, and as large as several hundred.
We scale the instruments and facilitation team to suit your numbers, so whether it’s an intimate leadership team or a full conference, we’ve got you covered.

We’d love to!
We’ll shape the workshop around your goals or theme, whether that’s teamwork, leadership, communication, or simply bringing energy into the room.
It could be a wellness day with yoga and meditation, a high energy conference opener, or even a pirate-themed staff party with drumming crews competing for treasure.
Whatever the theme, we’ll make it work.

Absolutely. Our experienced facilitators run corporate drumming workshops all across Australia, New Zealand, and Bali, and regularly travel to metro, regional, and remote locations.
Whether your team is in an office, a conference centre, or an outdoor retreat, we can come to you.

Yes. We can host team building workshops at our St Kilda studio in Melbourne, which comfortably fits 20–28 people.
It’s a ready-to-go space with instruments set up – all you need to do is show up and we’ll take care of the rest.

Definitely.
A live African drum and dance performance is a powerful way to open or close your event.
It lifts the energy in the room, creates a real sense of excitement, and leaves participants with a lasting impression.
Many teams choose to add our Wow Factor, a high-impact performance available before, during, or after your workshop, or even as a stand-alone event.

Of course.
Corporate events often need to manage sound levels, so we can use drum covers to reduce volume, or run rhythm workshops with body percussion, dance, and small percussion.
Drums do make noise, so we can’t be completely silent, but we’ll adapt creatively to keep things fun and workplace-friendly.

Most sessions run for 45–60 minutes, but we can adapt the length depending on your schedule.
We also offer shorter energisers for conferences and longer sessions for deeper team development.

Not at all.
Our workshops are designed for absolute beginners as well as people with musical experience. Everything is taught step by step, and the focus is on group energy, fun, and participation rather than technical skill.

Yes, we do. We can provide a rip-roaring drum and dance performance when you need to grab attention – popular for a product launch, conference, or AGM. Or we can turn it right down, creating ambient tribal grooves that set a subtle atmosphere in the background.

The positive effects of drumming are many.
Research has shown that group drumming can significantly reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing.

A study from the Royal College of Music in London found that workplace drumming interventions lowered anxiety and improved mood in staff groups.
Another body of research in organisational psychology highlights how shared drumming activities enhance cooperation, communication, and social bonding in teams.
Neuroscience studies have also shown that playing in synchrony activates brain pathways linked to empathy and cooperation, which helps teams work more effectively together.

In a corporate setting, these benefits come through as stronger teamwork, more adaptable thinking, and a boost in energy and morale. Drumming creates a shared experience where roles shift, listening becomes essential, and collaboration grows naturally – all of which are skills that support healthier, more productive workplaces.
