Custom Made Djembes

Custom Made Djembes

Custom made djembes, crafted for you.

You make all the big decisions about how you want your drum to look and sound, and we will put our experience and love into building your ultimate dream drum.

A Djembe Made Just for You

Our custom djembes are built by hand in our Melbourne workshop.
Each one starts with a quality hardwood shell, carefully shaped and finished to bring out its character.
You can choose the shell, skin, rope colour, and carvings to make it your own.

Whether you’re after a drum with a deep, warm tone or something light and responsive, we’ll work with you to create a djembe that fits you perfectly.

How it works

Choose your shell & skin

Your Perfect Shell
Select your drum shell for life from our wide collection of authentic African shells.

We work with medium and hardwood shells sourced from across West Africa, including Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and Ghana.

The Right Skin for Your Sound
Skin choice plays a big part in how your drum will sound. We offer a range of skins, including goat, calf and cow from Australia and West Africa.
We also have durable synthetic options available.

You can choose from three finishes: clean, overlap, or hair-on overlap.

Drum Preparation

Shell preparation shapes both the look and feel of your drum. Our sanding tools bring out the natural grain of the timber and prepare it for oiling.
We also sand the bearing edge to give your hands a smooth, comfortable surface to play on.

Oiling Your Shell
Oiling helps cure and protect the timber, keeping it strong and bringing out the natural grain. We use high-quality Danish oils and organic shea butter from Ghana for a lasting, rich finish.

Choosing Your Finish
You can decide how you’d like your drum to look – a glossy polish or a smooth matte surface. Each finish highlights the character of the wood in its own way.

The Fun Part – Making It Yours

Selecting the Fabrics
You can choose the fabric we use to wrap your drum rings. We have a wide selection of colourful African prints, from bold patterns to earthy tones.

Choosing Your Rope Colour
Pick from over a dozen rope colours in solid or mixed tones. It’s a simple way to make your drum uniquely yours.

Your Handle
A practical woven handle adds comfort = and we can match it to your chosen rope colours.

Once you’ve made your selections, we start building your drum. The process usually takes around 5–7 days.
