Our Professional Development workshops give educators practical tools in African drumming, songs, and percussion.

Designed to meet professional development requirements, these sessions build confidence, inspire inclusive learning, and provide classroom-ready activities that support student engagement and wellbeing.

Professional Development:
Songs, Rhythm games & Percussion

Inspire inclusive learning, engagement, and wellbeing in your classroom through interactive Professional Development workshops that explore African songs, rhythms, and percussion instruments.

Designed for educators from Kindergarten through Secondary levels, these sessions equip you with engaging games, melodies and rhythmic techniques you can immediately use with students.

You’ll leave with new tools, resources, and confidence to build rhythmic learning experiences.

Rhythm Games

Games for Djembe
Explore fun and interactive games for the djembe that help develop auditory, visual, kinaesthetic, language and social skills.

You’ll come away loaded with plenty of great games and inspiring ideas that you can incorporate into your drumming sessions.

Games for Small Percussion
There’s lots of fun to be had with shakers, bells and other small percussion!
Explore a range of dynamic games that feature the use of a variety of percussion instruments.

These games focus on being creative, designing learning opportunities that are accessible to a range of students, and incorporating a variety of instruments into rhythm-based learning.

Drumming for wellness

Drumming for Social Connectivity
Drumming is a powerful vehicle for developing of a range of social skills.

We’ll explore percussion games and facilitation techniques that build teamwork, effective communication, strong body language, and positive interaction.

Drumming for Mindfulness
Drumming is an incredible meditative tool, allowing participants to focus on the beats, drum, or their hands, and be present in the ‘here & now’, while promoting awareness of feelings, thoughts and behaviour.

We’ll focus on facilitation techniques to promote mindfulness, reduce stress, and centre the mind.

Drumming for All-Abilities

Online (Zoom): Saturday 1st August 2026
10am-12pm (AEST): Session 1
1pm-3pm (AEST): Session 2

West African-inspired drumming offers a powerful social and psychological tool to that enriches learning and personal growth across various contexts.

The games and activities presented in this workshop are designed for carers, therapists, and educators, to help individuals enhance their capacity for building meaningful relationships through mindfulness and collaboration.

These tools can support emotional regulation by stimulating both brain hemispheres, which in turn reduces vulnerability to reactive inner states.

Attendees are required to join both sessions together.

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers

Designed for both generalist and specialist teachers, our PD sessions will address the following from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:

Professional Development Certificates and Accreditation

Certificate of Completion
A digital Certificate of Completion is provided, supporting teachers who wish to count these workshops toward their required PD hours.

NSW Teachers
We are NESA accredited.

Rest of Australia Teachers
Courses are applicable towards Professional Learning hours.

Your teachers

Alastair Rae

Alastair is a lifelong disciple of rhythm, with a background in teaching, linguistics, and mathematics.

He is a facilitator at our Teacher Training program, and stands at the forefront of African Drumming’s community classes, performance groups, and school & corporate events.

Alastair believes in the cognitive and emotional benefits of drumming, and has a passion for learning West African rhythms and sharing them through the connecting power of drumming.

Djulz Chambers

Djulz has travelled West Africa extensively, studying with master drummers and musicians in Mali, Ghana, and Burkina Faso.

Based in Melbourne, Djulz continues to study, teach, and perform with some of Australia’s most renown artists.

She also brings drumming into education and wellness settings, leading professional development and facilitator training courses,  helping teachers to lead ensembles and weave the benefits of drumming into their curriculum.

It’s a growing library of classroom activities, traditional songs, and percussion games, designed to support teachers at every level.

Alongside the video library, we also offer downloadable professional development e-booklets.

These resources include lesson plans and practical guides that you can use straight away in the classroom. They’re an easy way to extend your learning and build a library of PD materials to revisit any time.

How to Access Your Workshop Online

These sessions will be run via Zoom, a free and easy to use software. 
Simply download Zoom, create a free account, and run a quick test to make sure your audio and video are working.

Desktop, laptop or ipad

Go to zoom.us on your device’s internet browser
On the top right of your screen there is a bright orange button that says “Sign up, it’s free!” Press this
Once you’ve created an account you can start using Zoom

Apple mobile device

Go into your app store on your phone and type in Zoom in the search bar
Look for the “Zoom Cloud Meetings” app and install it.
Once downloaded, you can either create a new zoom account or login with your existing account.

Android mobile device

Go into your Google play on your phone and type in Zoom in the search bar
Look for the “Zoom Cloud Meetings” app and install it.
Once downloaded, you can either create a new zoom account or login with your existing account.

Testing audio and video

Desktop, laptop or ipad

If you are having issues, you may need to update your webcam drivers. Once you’re logged in, follow these instructions to optimise your Audio for our sessions.
Click the Settings cog in the top right corner of the app’s home screen
Open the Audio tab and click the Advanced button at the bottom right. This will bring up three Audio Processing Options.
There are two background noise suppression options (persistent and intermittent), please disable both of them.
There is one other option: Echo Cancellation. This should be set to Audio.

 Mobile device

Before your online class, go into your Zoom app on your smart phone and click on the settings cog at the bottom right of the screen.
Click on Meetings.
Make sure your microphone is always turned on and your video is always turned on.

Our Facilitator Training Workshops offer hands-on learning, curriculum alignment, and ongoing support to prepare you to lead sessions confidently.
You’ll develop leadership skills, deepen your musical understanding, and receive a certificate upon completion. The training includes access to teaching resources and the flexibility to participate face-to-face or online.

We provide special school rates on a wide range of percussion instruments and ensemble packs.
