This handcrafted Soku draws on the traditional one-string bowed instruments of West Africa, combining a calabash resonator and kangaroo skin soundboard with a contemporary pinned hide attachment system. The Rosegum neck, Bunya pine bridge and black bamboo bow provide a thoughtful combination of materials and craftsmanship. Its bowed string produces expressive, singing tones that can be shaped into fluid melodies and rhythmic phrases. A distinctive interpretation of a traditional West African instrument, combining established musical heritage with a modern construction approach.

Also known as the n’diaraka or njarka in Songhai, the Soku is a rare and ancient traditional West African fiddle. It features in Wassoulou music of southwest Mali.

Hand made in Bobo Dialasso, Burkina Faso, it is constructed of a wooden bridge, resonating calabash, goat skin and a single thread (composed of many smaller fibres). It wails a feminine vocal melody.

Dimensions (L x W x H):  25cm x 25cm x 50cm
As these instruments are hand made from natural materials dimensions may vary slightly.

What is a Soku?
The Soku (also known as n’ko or sokou) is a traditional West African bowed string instrument, commonly played in Mali, Guinea, and across the Mandé regions.

How is a Soku different from a Komsa or Kora?
The Soku is played with a bow, producing sustained tones similar to a violin.
The Komsa and Kora are plucked, creating more melodic or harp-like sounds.
Check our full range of strings here.

Can the Soku be used in contemporary African drumming groups?
Yes! The Soku adds a sustained melodic line that complements rhythmic instruments like djembes and talking drums in modern fusion and drum-circle settings.

How do I maintain a Soku?
Keep the instrument dry, avoid extreme temperature changes, and occasionally check bow tension and string condition.
