About Our Djembes

Every djembe we make is built with care, using quality timber and traditional methods that honour West African craftsmanship

From the carving to the skin and finish, each drum is tuned, tested, and ready to play – made to sound beautiful and last for years.

Hand-Carved Djembes from West Africa

Each year we travel to West Africa in search of amazing djembes.
Over the past decade, we’ve been fostering relationships with the master carvers of Ghana, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Guinea.
We’re also established in Bali, where we develop affordable, quality djembes for our Indo Range.

All of our drums are covered by warranty, and we stand by our reputation of producing world class djembe drums.

African djembes

Two Master Series djembes with yellow and blue rope tuning, handcrafted from West African hardwoods.

Master series

Top-tier African hardwood djembes. We hand-pick the finest, most immaculate shells from our experienced carvers across West Africa.

Each drum is skinned and finished in Melbourne to the highest standards. The symmetrical shells contain 90% or more heartwood, giving them an exceptional tonal range and sound quality. Every hide is balanced to match the drum’s dynamics, bringing out its full voice. Each djembe looks as good as it sounds, with extra care taken in sanding, oiling, and polishing the shell.

This range includes outstanding soloist drums and rich accompaniment options. You’ll find djembes from Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Ivory Coast, crafted from premium hardwoods such as Khadi, Lenke, Dougarra, Numu, and Djala.

Two Primo Series djembes with detailed carvings and rope tuning, handcrafted from West African hardwoods.

Primo series

Quality West African hardwood shells that have the density to deliver real depth of sound.

Each djembe gets a little extra care on its playing edges and outer shell, making it easy to play and easy on the eye. They’re finished to a high standard, giving every drum a clean feel and polished look.

All Primo Series djembes have a full range of clean, balanced tones and come in varied shapes, sizes, and characteristics to suit different players.

Timbers in this range include dense Lenke, Djala, Dougarra and Khadi, as well as golden-toned Melina and Iroko hardwoods – each known for its strength, clarity, and warmth.

Five Ghana Series djembes with colourful rope tuning and carved shells, handcrafted in West Africa.

Ghana djembes

The Ghana range is our most popular. There’s nothing like a djembe from the motherland!
These are perfect entry-level drums that offer impressive quality at very competitive prices.

Made from medium-density Twenaboa timber, these djembes feature crisp tops and a deep low-end sound that’s always been a favourite.

Easy to play, with traditional and contemporary carvings to boot, the Ghana series comes in a range of head sizes, from 10” to 15”.

They’re generally lighter too, making them easy to carry and great for schools, workshops, or anyone after an authentic African djembe at an accessible price.

Our Full Djembe Collection

Indo djembes

Drums for all ages and sizes, made from eco-friendly mahogany hardwood, and topped with quality goat skins.

Produced by our team in Indonesia, these djembes offer rich sound and solid craftsmanship at an affordable price. We work closely with our makers to maintain consistent quality across every drum.

They’re great entry-level instruments. The natural goat skins aren’t irradiated or chemically treated, so they keep their natural oils, warmth, and durability.

The smallest and most affordable adult-sized drum is the 60cm Plus djembe – a popular choice that’s well-suited to shorter players.

Vegan djembes

Built without animal products, these djembes use durable synthetic heads that hold their tuning through changing weather. They’re reliable in any climate and easy to care for.

Their sound has a clear top and full bass, with plenty of projection. Great for players who spend time outdoors or prefer a drum that stays consistent year-round.

Each one is finished by hand, with strong shells and clean lines that look and play beautifully – without compromise.

FAQs

Our djembes are carved in West Africa, mainly in Guinea, Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Ghana, by master artisans who’ve learned their craft over generations.
We then complete the rope work, tuning, and skin fitting in Australia to ensure every djembe meets our sound and build standards.

We also offer an Indonesian range, made to our specifications for consistent tone and finish, providing an affordable option for all ages and sizes, including for schools, workshops, and community use.

It depends on your drum, your climate, and how often you play. We recommend checking the tension regularly – especially if you notice the tone sounding flat or dull. In warm or humid conditions, the skin can loosen faster, while dry weather can tighten it.

If your drum stays in a stable environment, you might only need to tune it every few months. You can find simple tips on how to keep your djembe sounding its best in our Caring for Your Djembe Drum Skin

Choosing a djembe depends on a few key factors: your height, experience level, and the type of sound you prefer. Here’s a quick way to think about it:

  • Height: Taller players are usually more comfortable with larger djembes (around 65 cm +), while shorter players often find mid-sized drums easier to handle.

  • Sound: Harder woods like Lenke and Khadi produce deeper, more resonant tones, while lighter woods like Twenaboa have a softer, warmer voice.

  • Exprience: Beginners often start with our Indo or Ghana ranges, while advanced players love the master and primo djembes in the African hardwood series.
