MEET YOUR TEACHER: MICHAEL NAUDE

African Drumming teacher in the park playing dun while collaborating with other players

Born in Zimbabwe, Mike began his musical journey with Southern African rhythms, practicing various disciplines since 1998.

In 2015, his passion turned westward toward the djembe, deepening after moving to Melbourne to study under Simon Fraser and Bassidi Koné.

He performs with fiery ensemble Dunu Teké and continually explores West African rhythm, believing music lives in us all – we just need to learn its language.

He performs with fiery ensemble Dunu Teké and continually explores West African rhythm, believing music lives in us all – we just need to learn its language.

Tribalism is a showcase for our drumming students who come together to share their music and growing skills.
Our Djembe classes take the stage, playing what they’ve been learning for friends, family, and the community.

The event brings together the best of grassroots drumming and dance from across Melbourne, featuring a mix of student performances, guest musicians, and plenty of energy. It concludes with a big jam, where everyone joins in for one final burst of music.

What do your intermediate djembe classes include?
Our Intermediate Djembe Classes focus on developing technique, dexterity, hand independence, and stamina. Classes build on foundational skills, introducing more complex rhythms (including 12/8 timing), ensemble playing, and performance techniques to help you take your drumming to the next level.

Do I need to bring my own djembe?
No! We provide a djembe for use during class. If you want to practise at home, you can hire a drum for $20 per week or choose our 6-week drum hire add-on. Feel free to explore our djembe range and find the one that suits you best.

Can I get a refund if I can’t attend a class?
We don’t offer refunds on class bookings. If you let us know by 5 pm on the day of your class, we can transfer your booking to a future class at no extra cost. Missed classes cannot be transferred.

What if I miss a djembe class? Will I fall behind?
Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! All drumming classes are recorded, and you can request the video to catch up.
Plus, we can provide practice resources and exercises designed to keep your skills progressing.
