Product Specifications
Melina (Gmelina arborea) is a golden hardwood with a great balance of weight and sound. Generally carved in typical Guinean style and having a sound profile with the brightness of lighter hardwoods like Iroko, and the punch of denser lenke.
In Guinea, particularly among the Baga people, the “Nimba” motif represents a powerful symbol of fertility, protection, and the nurturing force of women. It is most famously embodied in the Nimba mask, also known as the D’mba.
Here’s what it signifies:
✦ Fertility and Motherhood
The Nimba mask features an exaggerated bust and strong, stylized features, symbolizing motherhood, abundance, and the ideal woman. It celebrates women as life-givers and caretakers—not only of children but also of the entire community.
✦ Agricultural Prosperity
Nimba also represents the spiritual force that ensures good harvests and the health of the land. She is often invoked during planting and harvest festivals, linking the nurturing qualities of motherhood with the fertility of the earth.
✦ Cultural Role
Traditionally, the Nimba mask is worn by male dancers during ceremonies (like initiations or harvest celebrations), but it honours the spirit of womanhood. It’s one of the largest African shoulder masks and not worn over the face but supported on the dancer’s shoulders.
In visual motifs—on fabrics, crafts, or carvings—the Nimba figure symbolizes strength, nourishment, and cultural pride.
