Balafon are wooden keyed percussion instruments originating in West Africa, classified as idiophones. The name is Manding in origin, with related traditions found across the region under different names: the Balangi (Sierra Leone), Gyil (Dagara), and the Lobi and Gurunsi instruments of Ghana, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
This 8 key Mali balafon is handmade by master artisans using individually tuned Khadi hardwood keys, cowhide and calabash gourds. Khadi is considered one of the finest woods for balafon making.
Like all Mali balafon, it is distinguished by its large calabash resonators, which differ from the smaller gourds found on Guinea balafon. The key bed is shaped upwards at the lower register.
The keys are tuned to each other in a pentatonic scale.
Each calabash gourd resonator has a small hole covered by thin paper, traditionally a membrane, which gives the instrument its characteristic buzzing vibration.

Is this 8 key Balafon suitable for beginners?
Definitely! The smaller layout of this balafon makes it approachable and easy to navigate. Its limited key range allows players to focus on rhythm and foundational melodic patterns without feeling overwhelmed.

What is the difference between the 8 key and 16 key Balafon?
The 8 key Balafon has a more compact range, focusing on core melodic notes. It is lighter and easier to transport, while the 16 key version offers a broader tonal range for more complex playing.

What instruments go well with an 8 key balafon?
The 8 key balafon is Pentatonic so blends well with other pentatonic instruments like the Kamale Ngoni. It also sits nicely sonically with rhythmic instruments such as djembes, congas & bongos, shekeres, and aslatuas. Its focused tonal range makes it perfect for smaller ensembles and rhythm-based sessions.
